West MacDonnell National Park (VKFF-0532)

It took about 30 minutes to drive out to Simpson’s gap within the national park.  A fine day and not too hot so I went for a walk from the car park through the gap. The colours of the rock on each side of the gap were magical with the sun reflecting off the difference rock faces. The photos below are from my walk through Simpson’s gap.

I could have setup the dipole using one of the large trees in the dry river bed but I decided to hike up to the ridge behind the trees shown in the photo below. From here I would be able to setup the 5 metre vertical with no obstructions to the east, south and west.

I was not able to self spot due to no mobile phone signal so I started calling CQ parks on 14.244 MHz and within 5 minutes Michael VK6MMB located in Manjimup, Western Australia responded to my call and was very helpful in putting up a spot. Soon after that hunters were on frequency.

The two photos below show me operating. Sitting on the ground was a hard on the bottom.

The panoramic photo above shows the view to the south from my operating position on the ridge.
