Alice Springs Telegraph Station (VKFF-2858)
Arrived Alice Springs by plane and it was fascinating just how many airline companies have parked their planes at Alice Springs airport. It seems a never ending amount and apparently 5 billion dollars worth.
This is a video from the plane taking off overlooking all of the parked aircraft.
After work I drove to the Alice Springs Telegraph Station which is only 10 minutes from the centre of town. Plenty of parking and due to COVID there were no tours being conducted so I was free to roam around and look at the historic buildings and wonder the site.
This Telegraph station operated from 1872 - 1932. It was the first white settlement in central Australia. From 1932 - 1942 the station was a children’s home and then a reserve for the local Aboriginal population after the war.
The telegraph station was declared a historical reserve in 1963.
Below are photos I took whilst walking the grounds.
I decided to setup my operating position about 50 metres from the dry river bed where there was a large tree and a picnic bench.
The photos above show my operating position which was just up from the dry river bed. The are many trees with branches well above 10 metres in height so it was perfect for both the dipole and 10 metre vertical. I made activations over two days late in the afternoon on the 40 & 80 metre bands. All up a total of 45 contacts
